Random Illegality.

A new twist on an old favorite. You list your first 10 random songs that come up on your iPod or whatever, and then calculate what percentage of them were obtained legally.

(The last time I did this, I got 9 Fiona Apple songs in a row and my ancestors were eternally shamed. Here goes.)

1. NIN - 9 Ghosts 1
2. Insides - Bent Double
3. Sneaker Pimps - Spin Spin Sugar (Radio Edit)
4. Fat Joe - Safe 2 Say (I need to take this off, I’m kind of sick of it)
5. Fleetwood Mac - Gold Dust Woman (65% of the time I’m listening to this song I wish I was listening to the Hole version)
6. Sundays - My Finest Hour
7. Unk - Walk It Out (I’m about ready to take this one off too. I know, so soon?)
8. Miles Davis - All Blues [Adjusts monocle]
9. Patton Oswalt - Track 22 from the album 222 (“Solve Planck’s Constant, and you’re playing for a packet of crisps.”)
10. Beastie Boys - Shadrach

What percent were legally obtained: Either 60% or 80%, depending on how you count it. Insides & Fleetwood Mac were both single tunes ripped off friends’ CDs, which to me constitutes fair use, but the artists and the RIAA would disagree. Fat Joe was downloaded from some blog, and Josh emailed me that Patton album, so those two are outright not cool for me to possess. I’m extremely conservative on file sharing (support artists, duh), but as far as this list goes, I’ll sleep well enough tonight.
