1. This line, in an email from my friend C, who has finally gotten over a 14-year streak of dating men who weren’t good enough for her (Sorry important diplomat’s son! Sorry famous musician!): i am just so happy it’s retarded.

2. This week’s Tiny Showcase email from Shea’la, which was the best yet. Her emails inspire me to make my online correspondence with friends nicer, more interesting, more thoughtful. This of course goes against everything the Productivity Squad is telling you about putting concertina wire around your inbox, but I guess I’m tired of everyone acting like they’re so busy.

3. Storms in the midwest. The way you aren’t just beset: you can watch their approach, measure their progress in yards, miles. Tonight I wheeled my cart out of the grocery store and I saw up ahead in the street lights the rain starting to tear down. The ground beneath me was dry. I thought: I am not going to make it to the car. I could hear the raindrops getting louder, as the storm swept across the parking lot.

4. I want to say something about death, because a coworker of mine died unexpectedly this week, and he was such a sweet, gentle, warm, wonderful person. Not that I want to say death is good, but that I am slowly recognizing its importance. Death is a lesson that we have to keep learning, in order to get better at living.

5. And also, that each time someone I care about dies, it makes me think about all the friends and family members who’ve died in the past. Which is, in fact, good.
